Who are Lutherans and what do they believe?
The Lutheran Confession of Christianity is the third largest Christian group in the world. (Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Lutheran) Lutherans have been doing mission work in North America for hundreds of years. And Canada, on the shores of the Hudson Bay near Churchill, MB. has the distinction of hosting the first Lutheran worship service in North America in 1619. Lutheran Church–Canada (LCC) is both catholic and evangelical. It is catholic, because, as the Augsburg Confession (Art. XXXI - 1530A.D.) states, "As can be seen, there is nothing here that departs from the Scriptures of the catholic church or the church of Rome, insofar as the ancient church is known to us from its writers." Lutherans are also evangelical because of their deep and abiding commitment to the Gospel of Jesus Christ as our Savior from sin. Our commitment to God's Word is summed up in Martin Luther's response to the Emperor - Charles V. When asked whether Luther regarded the ultimate authority to be Scripture or tradition, Luther said that when the two contradict one another "My conscience is captive to the Word of God."
We Believe and Teach
- The Bible is the inspired and inerrant Word of God. - All people are sinners separated from God, cannot save themselves, and deserve eternal punishment. - Jesus Christ, God's Son and true God, having also be come true man, lived, suffered and died for the sins of all people, that we need not remain separated from God. - Those, through faith, who trust Jesus Christ as their Saviour, have forgiveness of their sins and eternal life with God. - A person is saved from eternal separation from God only by the grace of God Himself, through faith in Jesus Christ. "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God" (Ephesians 2:8) - God brings this faith and forgiveness to people through His Word and Sacraments. - In response to this loving gift of God, Christians worship their Saviour, and together with their fellow Christians in the Church, serve God and do His work. |
